    WWI - The Cause & Spark
    Many countries built their militaries up as the arm race began. The European countries made agreements with each other called alliances. If one country was attacked, the other was obligated to defend them. Nationalism and imperialism influenced the countries to prove their dominance and power. The spark that started WWI and brought all the other forces into play was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in June 1914 by a Serbian.

    Tsar Nicholas II was the last tsar of Russia. He was thought of as an incompetent leader. His people protested against him in 1917 which was called the Russian Revolution. Nicholas II abdicated his power and went into exile with his family. A year later the Bolshevik soldiers executed him and his entire family.
