    john Jay was the first chief of justice. There was only four cases during his time. This is important because it was the first cheif of justice.
  • John Marshal

    John Marshal
    John Marshal was cheif of justice from 1801-1835. John marshal was almost never on the looseing side of a case. He wrote almost all of his decisions and usually only within a few days. i think this is important because he almost set the roots and branches of the supreme court.
  • Marbury vs. Madison

    Marbury vs. Madison
    Marbary says that the supreme court is unconstitutional. This was important case because it set the judicial review.
  • Fletcher Vs. Peck

    Fletcher Vs. Peck
    fletcher had sued peck for selling him land that he had no claim to show that he owned it in the first place.
  • Dartmouth College vs Woodward

    Dartmouth College vs Woodward
    The New Hampshire legislature tried to force the dartmouth colledge to become public instead of private. The college won and continued being a private institution.
  • McCollough vs Maryland

    McCollough vs Maryland
    Maryland imposed a tax on all out of state banks. The bank branch in baltimore refused to pay the tax and Maryland brought up a law suit for collection of the bank. In the end Maryland could not tax the bank without violating the constitution.

    ogden brought up the lawsuit to keep gibbons off of new york waters. This didnt go though because his boats were licensed under the act of congress letting him able to be on the waters.

    The cherokee sued Georgia for passing laws stripping them of their rights and thier boundaries. the verdict was taht they were a indian tribe and not a sovereign nation so they had no jurisdiction
  • Worcester vs Georgia

    Samuel Worchcester tried Georgia for saying that non-indians couldnt go on indian lands without a license was unconstituional. In the end worcester was released from jail but never returned to indian lands.

    This was about labor unions. Labor unions that would close or try to create a workplace would get charged for conspiracy. In the end labor unions were legal organizations and had the right to go on strike.
  • Dred Scott v. Sanford

    Dred Scott v. Sanford
    The case was about that slaves were not protected by the constitution and that they could not be US. citizens. In the end dred scott lost and sanford unfortunitly won.
