Storage Devices

  • Drum Memory

    Drum Memory
During 1950 Magnetic Drum Memory was being used, This stored information outside of a rotating cylinder, This had a max capacity of 10 kB.
  • UNISERVO Tape Drive

    UNISERVO Tape Drive
This tape drive was released in 1951, When this was released it has the moving power of 100 inches per second, This means it would work out to have a 12,800 Characters per second processing speed, Another feature about this is that it can support both reading and writing in both backwards and forwards directions.
  • IBM 726 Magnetic Tape

    IBM 726 Magnetic Tape
This magnetic tape allows for inexpensive mass storage at the time, This was a part of the computer revolution, When IMB brought out a high-speed magnetic tape system for computers, it was announced on May 21st 1952, This system used a unique 'Vacuum Channel' method which keeps a loop of the tape.
  • WhrilWind Core memory

In 1953 MIT's Whirlwind becomes the first computer to use a magnetic core memory, The core is made up of tiny dounuts made of magnetic material strung on wires into a grid.
  • RAMAC

During the era of the magnetic disk storage dawns IBM has released a computer based on this new technology of the hard drive. The RAMAC disk drive consisted of 50 magnetically coated metal platters capable of storage about 5million characters of data.
