    Stephen Toulmin's first book, An Examination of the Place of Reason in Ethics, enlightened philosophical attention. One of his biggest arguments was that moral philosophers should quit analyzing isolated ethical terms and start examining how ethical judgment facilitates in particular contexts. His style was similar to Aristotle and he advocated moral reasoning be done on a case-by-case basis.

    In 2001, Stephen Toulmin's book Return to Reason was published as it "argues that the potential for reason to improve our lives has been hampered by a serious imbalance in our pursuit of knowledge" (Toulmin). These academic disciplines are seen today in economics as well as in law and medicine. Toulmin did not reject the values of science and technology but brought forth awareness of human consequences to discoveries.
