  • Early life

    Stephen Edelston Toulmin was born on March 25, 1922 in London. He grew up there and later on went to attend Kings College where he received his Bachelors in Mathematics and Physics. He later went on to be a Ministry of aircraft production Officer during WWII. In 1948 he received his PHD in Ethics from Cambridge University.

  • Toulmin method

    In 1958 Philosopher Stephen Toulmin published a book titled "The Uses of Argument". In that book Dr. Toulmin presented and explained his theory or method when it came to arguments. This method involved claim, ground, warrent, qualifier, rebuttal, and backing. It is said that his method is used for developing, analyzing and categorizing arguments. It is said to evaluate the effectiveness of each category.

    Making his theory very valuable to the philosophy of science and to any argument or philosophy that there is to try and figure out what would be more reasonable. His move to the United States officially lead him to a professorship with different prestigious universities. He taught and expanded his knowledge on his theory and which is now used and applied in different situations and subjects.

  • Stephen Toulmin's death

    Dr. Toulmin lived out the rest of his life in the United states. Stephen Toulmin died on December 4th, 2009 from a heart failure in Los Angeles California.
