    First Carthusian Monastery

    In 1181, Francis' birth year, the first Carthusian monastry in england was created. It was established at Witham by Pope Lucius III. Although this monastery does not still exist today, it is still a great achievement in history.

    Francsis, full name Francesco di Pietro di Bernardone, was born in Assisi, Umbra, Italy into the family of a prosperous merchant. H was the son of Pietro and Pica di Bernardone. He then dedicatd his life to poverty.

    At the Coronation of Richard I in 1189, there was a huge rebellion. This rebellion resulted in the murder of many Jews. This one riot killed enough people to deem it a massacre.

    Francis went to war joining some of his fellow citizens from Assisi. The war was between Perugia and Assisi. Francis was soon captured and imprisoned by militants from Perugia.

    Francis, after being captured by Perugia, was released in 1203. He then proceeded to return to Assisi. he returned in poor health and it took approxamately two years for him to recover.

    After recouperating from his poor condition from being imprisoned by Perugia, he attempted to renew his job with the military. He joined the war between many Itilian cities and states against the Roman Empire.He fought in the war for about two and a half years.

    While attending his usual mass, Francis heard a moving reading from the Gospel of Mathew. He started to preach to people and gain followers. He also decided to live a spirtually based life.

    Approval

    During the year of 1209 Francis hit a new high in his path of spirtuality. Pope Innocent III, the pope during this time, approved of his simple way of life. He then approved the establishment of the Franciscan Order. By the year 1215 the Fransiscan Order had gained more than 5,000 men.

    Genghis was a skillful warrior. He used many innovative tactics to conquer the land. He also used cruelty, so the people could have surrendured prior to the war. He then continued to conquer more and more land throughout Mongolia.

    In 1212, Francis accomplished another great milestone in his life. He established an order for women. This order was named for its first member Clara of Assisi, and was deemed teh Poor Clares.

    In 1221, Francis' group expanded once again. He set up the Third Order of Franciscan Brothers and Sisters of Penance. This group was created for both men and women, and accepted everyone.

    St. Francis lived a great and prosperous life.He served and helped many. It is not quite clear how he died, but it is clear that the date was October third.

    Canonized

    After years of hard work and dedicating his life to poverty and spirtuality, Francis finally becomes a saint. He was named a saint by Pope Gregory IX From now on, he will forever be known as Saint Francis, rather than Francis. Within two years of this his remains get transferred to the Basilica of Saint Francis, built in his honor.
