  • 1944 Act

    The 1944 education was passed free secobdary schooling. However it did not affect me.
  • Period: to

    Studying Abroad

    Traveeled around the world due to father's career. Went to many different schools and not aware of the Education Acts.
  • Abolished Grammar Schools.

    The Secretary of State gave thge the power to the LEAs to abolish the selction process for Grammar Schools. This introduced the non-selective systems.
  • East Ardsley Primary School

    September 1976 Shirley Williams as education secretary.
    The great debate on education by the Labour Leader Callaghan regarding the Grammar Schools.
  • Thatcher the milk snatcher came into power. I moved to Midlands to Churchfields High School.

    The Consertive party repealed the selection process and Grammar schools. However comprehensive school system remained. So the schools became separate foundation schools and independent schools.
  • Education Act

    Education Act 1979 gave the power to LEAs to have a Selection Process for secondary schools.
  • WoodKirk High School ( Woodkirk Academy)

    This was comprehensive school but is a Academy now.
  • 1980's Thatcher Weaken the role of LEAs.

    The publicity of the use of nursery rhyms like " Baa baa black sheep". I remember this well and the changes in the assisted places scheme meant that I was able to goto Churchfields school even though I did not live in the catment area.
  • The School Curriculum.

    The LEAs arranged for the schools to have "School Curriculum" and have school policies.
  • GCSEs first came out and were taught in 1986 .

    The course GCSE was first taught in 1986. The exams were first sat actually in 1988.
  • O Levels (CSE) abolished.

    The last exam in O levels was soon after I sat my O levels in 1983. The last O level was sat in 1987. This was then replaced by the GCSE.
  • Education Reform Act

    I had jsut stsrted Wolverhampton Polytechnic and this Act was refered to "The Baker Act".
    Established the Grant maintained schools or City Technology Colleges. These were not under the management of LEAs.
  • The Reform Act

    The Act established the National Curriculum.
  • Corporal Punishment

    The Baker Act in 1988 abolished the corporal punishment.
  • Education funding 1980's

    This affected me as I was still in University of Wolvehampton (Wolverhampton Polytechnical). Kenneth Baker Kenneth realised the high no of students going into further education. In 1989 the Tories introduced student loans to compensate for no annual increase in the grant. Grants of up to £2,265 was available for students from poorer families, and up to £420 in loans. This affected me as I was able to afford to goto further education,
  • 1988 introduced Youth Training Guarante.

    The goverment stated that children betwen the age of 16-17 should be either in education, employment or training.
  • 19869- BTEC qualifications

    Although I did BTEC National Certificate in Computer Studies in college, the goverment allowed schools to taech BTEC qualifications.
