The course GCSE was first taught in 1986. The exams were first sat actually in 1988.

The last exam in O levels was soon after I sat my O levels in 1983. The last O level was sat in 1987. This was then replaced by the GCSE.

In 1989 the Tories introduced student loans to compensate for no annual increase in the grant. Grants of up to £2,265 was available for students from poorer families, and up to £420 in loans. This affected me as I was able to afford to goto further education,

The goverment stated that children betwen the age of 16-17 should be either in education, employment or training.

Although I did BTEC National Certificate in Computer Studies in college, the goverment allowed schools to taech BTEC qualifications.
