  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education

    During this time the Supreme Court ruled segregation in public schools to be unconstitutional. After this happened it began a domino effect that raised the topic of whether disabled children deserve the same rights. Although this is not directly about disabilities it created a precedent that all children deserve equal rights.
  • Mills v. Board of Education District of Columbia

    Mills v. Board of Education District of Columbia

    This event influenced the creation of national legislation. This also began to extend the right to free public school to all children with any disability.
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

    This was the first civil rights law to protect individuals with a disability. With this it required schools to provide accommodations for the kids in public schools with disabilities.
  • Education of all handicapped Children Act

    Education of all handicapped Children Act

    This was a breakthrough event. It guaranteed free public education for children with disabilities. It as well introduced IEPs as a legal requirement.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Americans with Disabilities Act

    This act protected individuals with disabilities beyond the school. This also guaranteed protection of employment, community life, and transportation.
  • Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments

    Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments

    This began to add more possibilities for people with disabilities. It extended the rights to children at preschool age. As well as strengthened early intervention rights.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    This expanded the qualifications of disabled. It added autism as well as brain injuries to the list. It also required a means of public transportation starting at the age of 16.
  • IDEA amendments of 1997

    IDEA amendments of 1997

    This required students with disabilities to have access to general education. This also required goals in IEPs.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act

    This act began to allow children with disability to be held accountable in school the same as anyone else. This also began to require testing for reading and math yearly from grades 3-8.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act

    This introduced RTI for early identification for disabilities. This also began the idea that higher qualified teachers should teach disabled children.
  • Every Student Succeeds Act

    Every Student Succeeds Act

    This gave the states more flexibility when it came to accountability systems as well as continued inclusion. This also began to stress the topic of career readiness and college for all students including those with disabilities.
