    Jérôme Lejeune discovered that Down syndrome was caused by an extra chromosome on the 21st pair. Down syndrome is a a congenital condition characterized by a flattened skull, folds of skin in the inner corners of the eyes, large tongue, short stature, and by some degree of limitation of intellectual ability and social and practical skills. But they contain so much love within (personal opinion).

    Special Olympics was showcased to the world. It was a sporting event where people with disabilities could compete on the big stage against one another in an olympic modeling competition.

Individuals with disabilities have the same legal rights and admission to programs and services. Individuals with disabilities related to speech, manual, and sensory skills are legally entitled to supplementary tools and other aids.

    In 1997, amendments were made to the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act. This amendment provides greater detail about who needs to be present during Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings and different paperwork and procedures which are required for IEP documentation. Also, IDEA’s disciplinary standards and regulations were updated. In addition, states are responsibly for tracking and documenting the performance, growth, and evolution of each special needs student.

NCLB helps provides funds the primary and secondary education along with other contributions to the American education system.
