Mission San Clemente

Mission San Clemente is know as the first mission in Texas, even though there were two other missions built in the same location more than 50 years apart. This mission was abandoned due to a run in with the Apache Indians. -
Mission Corpus Christi de la Ysleta
Founded: 1682
This mission is located in El Paso, Texas. Also, this mission is now an active Catholic church. Mission Corpus Christi was built in a poor location. It is located close to the Rio Grande and floods a lot. The church was remodeled in 1897. Then, a fire happened and the church was rebuilt in 1908. -
Mission San Antonio de Senecu
Founded: 1682
This mission was founded by fleeing refugees from the Pueblo Revolt in New Mexico. The mission flooded several times due to being located due to the Rio Grande. This is probably what destroyed it. -
Mission San Francisco de los Tejas
Founded: 1690
This mission is now an active Catholic church and state park. Although there were other missions built first, they were apart of Mexico. This makes Mission de los Tejas the first mission in Texas. -
Mission San Jose de los Nazonis
Founded: 1716
This mission was founded by the Domingo Ramon expedition, among the Nasoni Indians. The mission was abandoned because of an attack by a French invasion from Louisianain 1719. The mission was later restored in 1721. -
Mission Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de los Nacogdoches
Founded: 1716
Mission de los Nacogdoches was built to serve the Nacogdoche tribe. Then mission closed in 1719 because of threats from French Louisiana, but reopened in 1721. The mission continued until 1773. -
Mission San Juan Capistrano
Founded: 1731
This mission is still an active church and state park. The mission was originally built in East Texas near Cushing. The mission was later moved to San Antonio and renamed San Juan Capistrano in 1731. The mission remained active until 1794, when missions in East Texas were ended. -
Mission San Ildefonso
Founded: 1746
Mission Ildefonso was the second of three missions built on the San Gabriel river. Drought and disease plagued the San Xavier mission, which were abandoned in 1755 after one of the padres was murdered by a soldier. -
Mission Nuestra Señora de la Luz
Founded: 1756
The mission was established along the east bank of the Trinity River, near the site of present-day Wallisville. Indian attacks and sicknesses caused the mission to be relocated much farther North on the Trinity River 40 miles South of Dallas. A hurricane leveled the mission 1766. The mission was shut down in 1772 as a part of a general pull-back. -
Mission San Lorenzo se la Santa Cruz
Founded: 1762
This mission was built to serve the Lipan Apache Indians in 1762. The mission was never supplied or well supported and was abandoned in 1769.
