There was an explosion 73 seconds after liftoff that killed the crew and destroyed the shuttle. A failure in a right solid rocket booster caused the explosion. Cold weather,also,didn't help.

The Galileo space craft was sent out for a six-year trip to Jupiter and possible observations of two asteroids Gaspra and Ida. Many other scientific experiments well done by the crew.

The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission mast was deployed nicely to its full length, and the feeler was turned to its operation position.
