    Apollo 11 Launches
    On July 20th, 1969, Apollo 11 carried astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins to the moon. Armstrong and Aldrin became the first men to walk on lunar soil that day, and Armstrong spoke the most famous words in space history as he set foot on the moon's Sea of Tranquility: "That's one small step for man. One giant leap for mankind." The excursion took roughly eight days and six hours, after which the crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, to be recovered by the USS Hornet.

    April 12th, 1981, was the date of the first Shuttle mission. This flight, known as STS-1, saw John W. Young and Robert L. Crippen test the capabilities of the shuttle Columbia in a manned space flight.     On the Columbia's re-entry into Earth it was destroyed, killing all of it's crew members. The crew consisted of Rick Husband as the Commander, William McCool as the pilot, Michael Anderson as the payload commander, Ilan Ramon as the payload specialist, and Kalpana Chawla, David Brown and Laurel Clark as the mission specialists. The accident occurred due to the left wing being damaged by a piece of foam debris, which let hot gases to get into the wing, destroying it, thus causing the explosion.

    The first spacecraft to complete a round-trip journey to an asteroid was a Japanese probe called Hayabusa. During its journey, Hayabusa landed twice on the asteroid, Itokawa, and collected samples. The picture to the left was taken while the probe was reentering Earth’s orbit over Australia.
