The war stemmed from a dis agreement of the Unites States of America and the Confederate States of America over whether or nor the south, which was the Confederate States could keep coloured slaves or not, the south wanting to continue slavery, the north aiming to end it.

    The Emancipation Proclamation
    In this year, the president of the United States issued the Emancipation Proclamation to all government officials. The Proclamation ruled that all slaves were to be freed on sight, but did not actually outlaw slavery.
  • End of the Civil War

    End of the Civil War
    The Civil war ends. The North is victorious, and as such, outlaws slavery permanently with the writing of the Thirteenth Amendment.
  • Ku Klux Klan

    Ku Klux Klan
    The Ku Klux Klan is formed for the first time in this year. The KKK as they are commonly called is a group of activists who believe in "white power" and hate anyone who is not a Protestant Christian and a Caucasian. This will lead them to perform terrible acts of racism through the years. The KKK wil disband in 1870, reform in 1915, disband again in1944, and reform once more in 1946.

    The Jim Crow Laws were written in a "loophole" format, taking advantage of the loopholes in the Thirteenth Amendment. They proclaim that coloured people and white people enjoy a separate but equal status, which was not true. Whte people dominated this society, often through violence and threat, which went unchallenged by the courts.

    In 1925, Malcolm X is born. He will become a Muslim minister and a human rights activist. His followers thought tha he was courageous and rightous, his political enemies found him to be a racist, preaching "black power".

    Martin Luther King Junior is born. He will become a clergyman, an activist, and a prominent leader. He is famous for his nonviolent protests of racism and segregation, and for his monumental speech at he foot opf the Lincoln memorial.
  • Assassination of Malcolm X

    Assassination of Malcolm X
    In 1965, Malcolm X, the famous anti racism activist, is assassinated, ending his civil rights activism.
  • Assassination of Martin Luther King

    Assassination of Martin Luther King
    In 1968, Martin Luther King was shot. Many people think that the deed was done by James Earl Ray, though, some think him innocent, King's son among them. Still, Ray was imprisoned for ninety-nine years.

    These days, racism is not common, and never in the extreme levels that it was in during the 1960's. Segregation has been irradicated completely, and all people are equal, both in law an in reality.
