  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Henry Clay of Kentucky created a compromise for the questions about Missouri joining as a slave state. The Compromise said that Missouri could be a slave state and Maine would join as a free state. Also, Congress drew an imaginary line at latitude 36 30' which banned slavery for forever north of Missouri.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    On January 21,1850, Henry Clay created the Compromise of 1850 and sent it to Congress. The plan would admit California as as a free state and would let New Mexico and Utah decide on slavery. It also abolished slave trade in Washington D.C. Nine months later in September, the Compromise was accepted.
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act
    Stephen A. Douglas sent abill into Congress get a railroad built to California. He thought that Congress could orgainize the Great Plains into the Nebraskas territory so this would work. Southerners said they would only accept this if Douglas made some changes. The final version was known as the Kansas-Nebraska Act which made the Great Plains into two territories (Kansas and Nebraska) and it also abolished the Missouri Compromise. Northerners feared that Slavery would run across the Great Plains
  • The Dred Scott Case

    The Dred Scott Case
    A Slave named Dred Scott brought a case to the Supreme Court on whether or not he was a free man. He lived in Missouri and then traveled to Wisconsin, a free state, with his master and back to Missouri. The Supreme Court had to decide whether or not he could bring a case to court and if he was a free man. The Supreme Court came up with the decision that he was citizen so he couldn't bring a case to court and that he was still a slave because he was considered property.
  • The Election of 1860

    The Election of 1860
    Abraham Lincoln was running as a Repulican, while the Democrats were split up by three people, Stephen Douglas, John Breckinridge and John Bell. Since his opposition was divided, Lincoln easily won. He only won with 40 percent of the votes. the Southerners saw the Election of 1860 delievering the message that they were the mionrity of the Union.
  • The Attack on Fort Sumter

    The Attack on Fort Sumter
    On April 12, 1861, the South opened fire on Fort Sumter in the Charleston Harbor in South Carolina. After 33 hours of being attacked, the Fort lowered the american flag and replaced it with the white flag of surrender. The caused an uproar in the North. The time for compromise was no long over as this event kickstarted the Civil War.
