Boticelli was born in 1445 near Florence, Italy. His father was Mariano di Vanni d'Amedeo Fillpepi. Boticelli's birth name was Alessandro Mariano di Vanni Fillpepi.

Boticelli was apprenticed to Fra Fillipo Lippi. Many of his early works were done. He also traveled to Hungary and painted a fresco.

Boticelli had his own workshop by 1470. He drew with clear contours and minimizing strong constracts of light and shadow.

Boticelli painted The Adoration of the Magi in 1475-1476. It contained many portraits.

The pope summoned many artists including Boticelli to paint the walls of the Sistine chapel. Boticelli painted "Temptations of christ," "Pumishment of the Rebels," and "Trial of Moses."

Both these paintings were painted around this time. They were both seen by Vasari. In 1499 both these paintings were installed at Castello.

Boticelli followed Savonarola and his preachings, His art went from decorative to devout. After Savonarola's execution, Boticelli painted The Mystical Nativity.
