    This led to the Missouri compromise. So what happened is that Maine came in as a free state the same time Missouri came in as a slave state. This also helped to keep the balance of how many slave states and free states there were.

  • Nat Turner began a Rebellion

    Nat turner thought he was told from god to start a rebellion and hoped that people would fallow in his footsteps and join his rebellion.
  • U.S. and Mexican War starts

    U.S. and Mexico go into war because the U.S. believed they had a destiny to expand their land from sea to shining sea.
  • U.S. and Mexican War Ends

    The United States wins the war against Mexico. From the U.S.'s victory they recieved the state of Texas. But this later caused disputes between U.S. and Mexico about the border line.
  • The compromise of 1850

    This became necessary when california wanted to join the Union. The compromise was that California could be a free state but they had to follow the fugitive slave law stronger than in the Constitution.
  • New Mexican Territory labled

    Current day New Mexico and Arizona were now New Mexico Territory. The territory was below the line from the Missouri comromise and congress stayed quiet about weather or not it would be a slave state.
  • Fugitive Slave Law

    A new Fugitive slave law was made and outraged many Northerners. The Fugitive slave law stated that any slaves that escaped to the North were to be returned to the South.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin was published

    Harriet Beecher Stowe published uncle tom's cabin. This angered the South because they did not want people to see them like it was said in the book.
  • The Kansas-Nebraska act was passed

    The act stated that each state could decide if they wanted to allow slavery or not allow slavery. During the meeting over this Senator Summer was hit unconscious on by Preston Brooks's cane.
  • Dred Scott was Sued for his own Freedom

    When Dred Scott was a slave, his owner took him to the Illinois and Wisconsin Territory. Which was the Northwest Territory in which was a free state.
  • Presidential Election of 1860

    The wondering if slavery would be allowed in the territories dominated the presidential election. At this time Abraham Lincoln was one of the candidates.
  • The Start of the Civil War

    When the US troops are resupplied at fort sumter in charleston Harbor, confederate forces fired on fort sumter. Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas joined the Confederacy after Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to stop the rebellion. And the Civil War had started
