    Sir Hillary's first major climb was in 1939 when he reached the summit of Mount Oliver in the Southern Alps.

    Over 400 attempted, about 10,000 pounds of baggage were carried up. Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to reach the summit of Everest.
