    Less than 30 years ago weed was illegal in all aspects in every state. Although it is controversial to so many, right around 60% of states in the US have legalized marijuana for at least medical use. Some states have legalized weed for recreational use.

    Alaska, the District of Columbia, Oregon, and Washington all pass bills to legalize the use of medicinal marijuana. This was a huge surge occurring only two years after California lead the way.
  • Controversy In D.C.

    U.S. Congress, angry at this legalization of weed in the District of Columbia, voted to prevent the initiative from being enacted.
  • Maine follows suit

    Maine voters pass Question 2, a ballot initiative legalizing medical marijuana.
  • Another wave

    Colorado voters pass Ballot Amendment 20, to allow the legal use of medical marijuana, Hawaii legalizes the medical use of cannabis, Nevada voters pass Question 9, to amend the state's constitution to allow medical marijuana.

    The U.S. Congress reverses its blocking of the District of Columbia's Initiative 59 that voters passed in 1998, finally realizing its uses. The Obama administration issues a memo to federal prosecutors, asking them to refrain from convicting those who distribute medical marijuana in compliance with state laws.
  • Distribution Centers Rise

    Maine and Rhode Island pass laws to open non-profit dispensaries of marijuana in their state. New Jersey also jumps on board and legalizes medical marijuana.

    Over half of all drug arrest in 2010 were for marijuana. This caused anger to many Americans as they saw this as a way of stopping it's progression.

    Arizona, the District of Columbia, and Delaware have now officially legalized medical marijuana in their states as well.

    Colorado and Washington state both legalize marijuana for recreational use. This caused miniature protest because some people still saw weed as a danger.

    The Obama administration issues the "Cole memo" to federal prosecutors to limit intervention in states that have legalized marijuana. Illinois and New Hampshire also legalize medical marijuana.

    Five more states legalize marijuana in some form. Minnesota and New York Sate do it for medical purposes. Alaska, the District of Columbia, and Oregon all legalize marijuana for recreational use.

Three more states now have recreational use.
