    Phoenix College elected its first African-American student president Eldridge Gonaway and was ahead of the times. In 1954, the local high schools finaly desegregated.

    The National Science Foundation selected Phoenix College, along with Northern Virginia Community College, to participate in a pilot project for the development of computer-aided instruction.

    With the launch of the IPP in 1981, the college made a commitment to address the educational and training needs of interpreters to serve as a bridge between the hearing and deaf communities.
