Herman Talmadge elected into office as the Georgia governor for the first time during the "three governor controversey." He had to fight with Marvin Thompson, the then lieutenant governor, for the position. He then served four consecutive terms in office from 1948-1956.

The Georgia state flag was changed to resemble the confederate battle flag in 1956. The state senators Jefferson Lee Davis and Willis Harden were well known for their interests in Gerorgia's Confederate history.They both agreed to introduce a change in the state flag. A strong impulse to change the flag was the Brown v. Board of Education decisions in 1955.

Dr.Mays originally became president of Morehouse College in 1960. His most famous student, Martin Luther King, Jr., became a very important figure head in U.S. history. -

In 1960 Ernest Vandiver, Jr. was forced to decide to either close public schools or desegregate them. The result was all public schools in Georgia would desegregate. -

Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton Holmes were the first African American students admitted into the University of Georgia. The were both temporarly suspended from campus because of riots started by white students. They soon returned to campus and graduated in 1963. -
John F. Kennedy speaks about the Albany Movement
The Albany Movement was the largest mass movement in the Civil Rights era. It was intended for desegregating the community and resulted in 1.000 African Americans getting arrested. This whole concept was all put together by the SNCC. -

250,000 people, led by Martin Luther King, Jr., marched at Washington D.C.for jobs, freedom, and civil rights for the colored. It was the largest outbreaking ever witnessed in D.C., and on of the first protests to have extended television coverage. This was one of the largest Civil Rights Act in U.S. history.

Following Maynard Jackson's first election, he was the first African American to be Mayor of a major southern city. He then returned for a third term in 1990 following Andrew Young's term. He worked with Billy Payne and the Atlanta Olympics organizing committe to bring the 1996 Olympics to Atlanta.
