Scientist Theory And Evidence

  • Abraham Ortelius

    Abraham Ortelius
Abraham Ortelius is the scientist that came up with the continental drift theory, he found similar animals, fossil faunas, and different plants in different parts of different continents. Alfred Wegener also developed his theory and supported it and found more evidence to it such as that the continents edges fit together to form one peace.
  • Alfred Wegener

    Alfred Wegener
supported and completed Ortelius's theory of continental drift. He stated that the continents were one hole peace, by finding animals, plants, fossil faunas, and rocks in different parts of the world, and these things can not move in water so they probably were in one place that has moved.
  • Frederick J. Vine

    Frederick J. Vine
Showed that the sea floor spreading from mid-ocean ridges has a symmetrical pattern of the magnetic stripe, which was more evidence to Ortelius and Wegener's theory. His theory referred to Morley Matthew's theory however it was not as well received as her theory.
  • Harry Hess

    Harry Hess
the earth's crust is moving away and the sea floor is slowly moving and spreading, this was Harry Hess's theory wich led to the theory of plate tectonics. he supported his hypothesis with the discovery of submerged and guyots. however, the science community disagreed with his theory because it was known that the magnetic fields of earth and ocean floor have the same age.
  • Arthur Holmes

    Arthur Holmes
He thought that the mental of the earth contains convection cells that cause it rises and sinks as its temperature changes, which carried the continents and led it to move apart, due to his studies of physical geology which led him to support the continental drift. his theory was widely respected by many other scientists.
  • Lawrence Morley

    Lawrence Morley
He stated that there is a magma that contained iron rising at a mid-ocean ridge that contains iron caused by the rocks moving on the ocean floor and the rocks magnetic elements would be locked in place at the current magnetic position. Over time on earth the magnetic poles reverse, locking the new elements in the rock at the mid-ocean ridge in the opposite orientation. which also supported the theory of continental drift by Ortelius and Wegener.
  • Dan McKenzie

    Dan McKenzie
He supported the idea of plate tectonics by mathematics. He stated that the mental of the earth is made of two layers (the upper mental and the lower mental) that are moving which caused the continents to move slowly. He also came up with another idea which stated that the viscosity of the lower mental is what caused the continents to move apart.
  • Drummond Hoyle Matthews

    Drummond Hoyle Matthews
He supported the idea of continental drift by seafloor spreading by stating that the magnetic stripes on the sides of ridges on the ocean flare were a result of sea floor spreading.
