This archive displays pictures of nurses in the late 1800's and showed what they looked like, dressed like, and where they lived. All nurses lived together in a large building, and all had to dress the same, in dresses. These pictures also include an isolation building, which is where nurses would stay if they became ill, which is much different than today. -
This book talks about what each job in the medical field entails and includes the various roles that nurses play and jobs they are familiar with. This book was written in 1917 and discusses internal medicine and the use of nurses. What is not included in this book, is the job of saving lives and making sure patients are comfortable, and feel safe. In today's world, that is a common trait among nurses. -
During the 1918 Influenza, there was an extreme decrease in nurses and the Red Cross, which was founded in 1881, was yet again there to help and was on a search for nurses. The shortage was due to nurses contracting influenza and were not able to work, so more help was needed. This shortage occurred in Dallas and was announced in local newspapers to spread the word. Today, there is hardly ever a shortage of nurses, and help is always available. -
In this photo is a group of graduating nurses from the Lincoln School. This class includes African American nurses, which was new to the world of nursing, and it was amazing to see all of these women become nurses and hold what would become one of the greatest honors someone could have. This photo shows nurses being "capped" as a sign of graduation. Similar to receiving your diploma. This was a big step for women in nursing, especially women of color. -
This article describes the events occurring during COVID-19, the deadly pandemic that has struck the country and has affected millions. Nurses working in the COVID-19 units at hospitals are working as long as 12 hour shifts, just to help keep these patients alive. This article widens knowledge of those who are unaware of the long days nurses have and how many hours they work daily. The nurses are the true heroes in these stories. -
