    Robin Hood

    The earliest recorded references of Robin Hood date back to the 13th Century, although not as stories or folklore but in the English Justices. Referred to at the time as 'Robinhood, Robehod or Hobbehod'.
    Since thise times, there have been different descriptions and stories based upon Robin Hood, ranging from stories to ballads to tv and movies.
    All focusing mainly on his 'stealing from the rich, giving to the poor.'

    This contains many of the aspect that are still prevailant today, such as Nottingham being the setting and the rivarly between Robin Hood and the Sheriff.

    A Gest of Robyn Hode and other printed examples
    A Gest of Robyn Hode, was the first printed version, which included a series of short stories that would attempt to connect episodes into a contiuous narrative.
    Robin Hood and the Monk, Robin Hood and the Potter and Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne are not included in the Gest of Robyn Hode.
    None of these specifically claim Robin Hood robbed from the rich and gave to the poor as legend would have it.

    Maid Marian
    Robin Hood originally had no female companion, so the idea of one was added in later tales, mainly for the May Day Games.
    Alexander Barclay wrote circa 1500 "some merry fytte of Maid Marian or else of Robin Hood".
    She has has many depictions herself, being related to the King as a neice in one tale and being the daughter of the Sheriff in another.

    Merry Men

    During this time period, Robin Hoods band of followers were coined as 'Merry Men'.
    Robin Hoods companions were mentioned in earlier Ballads, although his band was known to be a hundred strong or more, only a few were regularly mentioned, such as Little John, Will Scarlet and Much the Miller's Son.

    Anthony Munday wrote a pair of plays about the legend of Robin Hood. Published in the 17th century, this fixed the idea that Robin Hood stole from the rich and gave to the poor.

    Victorian Era Distinction

    During the Victorian Era, much of the mythos portayed by the modern day started here.
    The story was adapted for children, and the story 'The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood' by Howard Pyle would be the greatest influence on modern day Robin Hood stories.
    This is where the idea of Robin Hood 'Taking from the rich and giving to the poor' become apparant.
