Charles Darwin (February 1809 - April 1882)

  • Birth

    Charles Darwin was born on the 12th of February, 1809 in Shrewsbury, England. Darwin was the son of Robert Waring Darwin, and Susannah Wedgwood.
  • HMS Beagle voyage

    At the age of 22 in December of 1831, Darwin set off on the HMS beagle from Plymouth, England. He would set out for a 5 year voyage on this expedition he would begin to form his theory of evolution.
  • Begins writing theory on natural selection

    In 1842 Darwin would begin his writing on the theory of natural selection to which he did not intend on publishing immediately. In this writing he would challenge the current paradigm of natural history and present his own.
  • First public acknowledgment.

    In 1858 at the Linnean Society Darwin would present his theory of natural selection at this gathering a year before the release of his work.
  • Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species

    In 1859, Darwin release his book, "Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species". His theory of evolution through natural selection, would later become known just as “Darwinism". His work would become widely accepted in the late 1800s.
  • Death

    Suffering almost his whole life with illnesses he succumbed to a heart attack in April of 1882 in his family home in Down, England a village of London, England, and was laid to rest in the Westminster Abbey.
