    Magna Carta

    King John signed the Magna Carta Runnymade on Thames in England. It garenteed the people a trial when suspected of a crime and reedom of church. It also stated that taxes could not be levied without popular consent.
  • Mayflower Compact

    The Mayflower Compact was signed by 41 English colonists. It was to prevent dissent amongst Puritans and nonseparatist Pilgrims. It was the first government framework in the colonies.
  • Petition of Rights

    a. Non-parliament taxation, forced billeting of soldiers, imprisonment without cause restricts the use of martial law were all rights granted to the subjects. b. Charles I signed this document.
  • English Bill of Rights

    English Bill of Rights
    William and Mary signed the English Bill of Rights, which was ultimately passed by Parliment. It banned excessive bail and fines and cruel and unusual punishments. It also limited the power of the crown and rearmed the Protestant people, after King James III took that right away.

  • French and Indian War

    French and Indian War
    France's expansion into the Ohio River valley repeatedly brought the country into armed conflict with Britian.
    a. France and Britian struggled for control of America. The colonists aligned with Britian, and the Indians were for the French.
    b. Battle of the Monogahela, The Capture of Quebec, Battle at Oswego, and The Battle of the Wilderness were all key battles.
    c. Britian and the colonists ultimately won.
    d. The colonies were now strictly under Britians control.
  • King George III takes power

    King George III takes power
    King George III introduced the Stanp Act to raise more revenue from British America. He caused much mistrust among the colonists and continued to mistreat them until America was independent.
  • Stamp Act

    The tax was imposed due to Britians debt from the Seven Years War, when they tried to generate revenue from the colonists. It was later repealed, but the Declaratory Act followed, which reaffirmed Britians authority to pass injust laws.
    a. Anything dealing with papers of the court, like: land grants (land was taxed), cards, newspapers were taxed. b. The colonial leaders didn’t like the act, and started protesting it almost right after it was passed to Parliament.

    The Boston Tea Party was preformed by Massachusetts Patriots, who were protesting the monopoly by the East India Company, which was granted by Parliment.
    a. The Sons of Liberty were in charge of the event.
    b.Parliment then passed the Coercive Acts to punish Boston and the resistance.
  • Intolerable Acts

    They were a series of four acts established by the British government. The aim of the legislation was to restore order in Massachusetts and punish the people of Boston for the Tea Party.
    a. They stripped Massachusetts of self-government and historic rights.b. it enlarged the boundaries of modern day Quebec.
  • First Continental Congress

    a. Important delegates from the 13 Colonies were present (except Georgia) Some important people were Richard Henry Lee and Patrick Henry.b. Ideas such as, Boycott British Goods and Second Continental Congress, came about at this meeting.c. It took place in Philadelphia (Carpenter’s Hall)
  • Lexington and Concord

    This kicked off the American revolutionary War. Hundreds of British troops marched from Boston to nearby Concord to try and seize an arms cache.
    a. “The shot heard around the world” - This was a major battle, which the resulted in the people to decide which side to join, loyalists or patriots.b. Colonel Smith was for the British, and Paul Revere was for the Americans. c. When Paul Revere saw the British coming, he road his horse through the town and warned the people that they were coming.

    a. Philadelphia was where it was held.b. This meeting discussed the colonial war effort, and moved towards independence, which is why they adopted the Declaration of Independence.c. It involved the delegates of the 13 American Colonies, except Georgia.

    a. Representatives from many states gathered up in order to discuss the problems within the government, but ended up creating a report to create a more financially independent government.b. The original purpose was to remedy the defects within the Federal Government.
