Nobel Peace Prize

Civil rights activists led by Dr. Martin Luther King staged their second march from Selma Alabama to Montgomery Alabama. Dr. King had a bad feeling about what was going to happen during the march and decided to not continue on with the march that day. -

On March 15, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson went on national television to give his support of the Selma protesters. -
March on Selma Part III
On March 21, 1965 thousands marched from Selma Alabama and made their way to the steps on Capitol Hill where Dr. King gave a nationally televised speech. Just a few short months later, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law. -
Voting Rights Act was signed
August 6, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a law known as the Voting Rights Act. By signing the act into law it meant that poll taxes could not be collected for Federal elections and literacy tests were not allowed among other things. -
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination
On April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis Tennessee at the Lorraine Motel. He was just 39 years old. James Earl Ray, an escape convict killed Dr. King while he was standing on the balcony at his motel. -
Right to Vote at Age 18
The 26th Amendment was ratified and the voting age was lowered from 21 to 18.
