    Hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii. The barrage lasted just two hours, but it was devastating. The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan.
