  • First Catholic Schools

    The first Catholic school opened in 1803. However, there was large struggles for schools as there were many disputes between religious groups on the curriculum meaning education split into 2 strands.
  • First Catholic Mass in Australia

    Fr James Dixon was the first priest to hold a mass in Australia. It was held for the Irish and he was given permission to do so by the Governor
  • Restrictions went back

    After only 10 months the Government restricted the Catholic church again after they believed the church was at the centre of a protest with over 300 Irish people protesting against the harsh treatment against them
  • Fr O'Flynn

    Fr O'Flynn was a priest that celebrated mass in peoples homes. HE did this without government authorisation and in turn was deported from Australia
  • First Bishop of Queensland

    James quinn was the first bishop of Queensland. He set up the first secondary school for girls in QLD with the Sisters of Mercy. The school was named all hallows' and opened in 1861
  • Government funding to Catholic schools Abandon

    The government decided to cut funding to Catholic schools meaning the resources they had were very limited compared to public schools.
