    Again, the exact date is not known, but trawling, which is now a popular method of fishing for commercial fishermen, like most methods of fishing started in the 1600s. When trawling, large nets are pulled behind fishing vessels. This poses a problem however, because there can be lots of bycatch, harming the ecosystems.

    Fishing has been around since BC, however the rod and reel we know today showed up around 1770. The rods were made of heavy wood and wooden spool with a metal ring that fishermen could hold on to while fishing.

    By the 1880s, silk treated with linseed oil replaced horse hair as fishing line. This made fishing lines much easier to use and resulted in an increase in catch.

    Although the exact date was not found, long lining has become popular among commercial fisheries because it could catch a large amount of pelagic fish at one time. Hooks are arranged on a long line and released from a boat to be retrieved after a certain amount of time
