Elementary School Readings: Success For All Books
I first started reading when I was in elementary school. My school was involved in a program know as Success For All (or SFA for short). Our reading level was assessed through a diagnostic test to determine reading comprehensive relative to peers of the same age group. Based on this examination, students were grouped based on the reading level there were at. Each group was assigned what was know as SFA Root books of different color. The color indicated the difficulty of it.

Our School required that every student read at least one hour at home. To document this, we had to get our parents signature in a page that contained 5 boxes for the 5 days of the school week. Though I initially hated reading, I slowly grew fond of it when I was reading material that interested me. My favorite books to read in elementary school pertained to those about outer space.

In school, we mainly focused on reading fiction books. I recall not being particular interested in the books that we did read. This probably lead to my greater interest in information books as an adult. The only book I remember vividly was that of Clockwork. The ending of the book terrified my as kid and the entire setting was fantastical and unsettling.

As I grew older, I had a wider array of interests. I started reading books that pertained to other subjects such as biology and history. Nonetheless, there was still a particular characteristic in books that I gravitated more towards. From what I can remember, at home I read almost exclusively nonfiction books. My favorite series of books to read from were the Eyewitness books.

Following the trend of middle school, we continue to read a lot of fiction books in high school. There was a more sizable amount of books that we read which I did enjoy or at the very least find memorable. My favorite book that we read was Great Expectations. The ending was very sad, but realistic in my opinion.

High School Books: Least Favorite Book
My least favorite book that I read in high school was a novel called Speak. The book dealt about a high school girl who is sexually assaulted while attending a party. It was really hard for me to get through the book because the content it was talking about was heavy and depressing.

My second favorite book that I read in high school was a book called Pride and Prejudice. I really enjoyed the dynamic between the main character Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. In all honest, it was a pleasant surprise to know that I enjoyed this book as much as I did. What made a joy to read was how witty and spunky the main character of Elizabeth was.

Another book that I did enjoy reading in high school was The Great Gatsby. The setting in 1920s was fun and not something I had been exposed to before in a novel. I remember the teacher explaining the signification of the green light that appeared outside Gatsby window and the color of the dress of one of the main characters.

Entering college, the content that I mostly read at home also changed dramatically. The lack of expendable time meant that any reading that I did read was no longer for leisure but for school. As such the majority of my reading was school related. It is interesting to note that for the first time in my life I was activity reading textbooks as opposed to nonfiction books or novels. Going into my freshman year in college, I had to struggle to learn how to read math textbooks.

Surprisingly enough, when I entered college most of my English classes focused mainly on the writing aspect of the subject. We did not read any novels in either of my English 101 class or English 102 class. When I took English Literature, this all changed. We read several books, but the one I remember most enjoying was that Don Quixote. I had never read a parody work before and having my first be Don Quixote was great. The humor was were well writenn and nuanced.
