Lane Bower, a recently retired assistant professor of Lock Haven University's PA program, was honored with this award from Drexel University for her outstanding achievement, innovative contribution, service, and dedication to the PA profession. Lane is a 1981 graduate of the Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital PA program which is now the Drexel University PA program.

PSPA leaders joined PAs from all over the country in Washington DC to promote Senate Bill 1825 and House Resolution 1617. Senate Bill 1825 would allow PAs and other APPs to certify and manage home health for Medicare patients. House Resolution 1617 would authorize PAs to certify a patient's need for therapeutic shoes.

$24,500 was raised for the Miracle League of Northhampton Township an organization that provides team sport experiences for kids and young adults with mental disabilities. Arcadia University raised the most money. Also participating were DeSales University, Drexel University, Jefferson University, PCOM, and Salus University.

11 seated delegates and 3 unseated delegates attended and participated in the HOD in New Orleans. Our delegates submitted a resolution encouraging the use of Patient Drug Monitoring Programs. Other resolutions pertained to Optimal Team Practice, Physician - PA ratios, Physician Assistant name change, and in-person didactic training for PA programs.

Penn State University won the 29th Annual National Medical Challenge Bowl in Denver. A record number of teams, 104, met the eligibility requirements for participation in this competition. The team consisted of Jamal Benson, Brandon Kinneman, and Brendan Comerford. Lolita Feld served as the team’s alternate.

Over two years of work went into the new website. Features include a sleek and modern design with an attractive color scheme, simplified menus, better headings for information, easily divided sections for members/students/employers/public, improved “members only” section, job board, advertisements, working links to external sites of interest, and functional search feature.

Breakfast meeting and legislator visits. Over 50 PAs held over 80 meetings with senators, and house representatives.

Legislation was referred to Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure Committee. It would allow countersignature and ratio requirements to be determined at the practice level. It would also allow for filing of work agreements instead of requiring “approval” by the state medical and osteopathic boards. It would remove the requirement for physicians to be on-site at satellite locations. Finally, it would create permanent PA seats on both the medical and osteopathic boards.

The PSPA board of directors voted to create two new PSPA membership categories. These categories are open to new graduates in their first year after graduation to have the privilege of fellow or affiliate membership status at 50% the cost.

Governor Wolf granted the request for a suspension during the COVID-19 emergency declaration to allow licensed practitioners in other states to provide services to Pennsylvanians via the use of telemedicine, without obtaining a Pennsylvania license, for the duration of the COVID-19 emergency.

During the COVID-19 emergency declaration, physician assistants licensed in this Commonwealth or licensed or authorized to practice in any other state who is responding to a need for medical care created by a declared state of emergency or a state or local disaster (not to be defined as an emergency situation which occurs in the place of one’s employment) may render care consistent with relevant standards of care.

During the COVID-19 emergency declaration, Osteopathic physicians may supervise more than four PAs. All physicians no longer need to be named on the written agreement. Written agreements needing board approval is suspended. Countersignature requirements will be suspended. Board approval of a physician assistant at “satellite operations” is suspended. This will allow more physician assistants to practice wherever they are needed during the disaster declaration.

During the COVID-19 emergency declaration, individuals in the healthcare field who have inactive licenses or have allowed their Pennsylvania license to expire, are allowed to seek reactivation and immediately resume work within their scope of practice, provided their inactive or expired license is/was in good standing.

The CARES Act amends the Social Security Act to permanently allow PAs and NPs to order/certify Home Health for Medicare beneficiaries.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the BoD votes to made the 2020 Fall CME Conference entirely virtual.

This was the first ever virtual conference due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cost was $485 and there were 360 attendees including 240 online participants at once. There was a virtual exhibit hall. All committee meetings were done virtually and in advance of the conference. There was a Virtual 19th Annual Fun Run and Walk. The charity was Grady's Decision and PSPA donated $2,393.
There was no challenge bowl, welcome party, or PAC silent auction. -

Previously Medicare policy required that the employer of a PA be paid for services provided to Medicare patients. However, other health professionals – physicians, advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), physical therapists, psychologists, podiatrists, social workers, and others – were permitted to receive direct payment under their own name and National Provider Identifier number. PAs will also now be able to receive direct payment. It will take effect January 1, 2021.

There was a Halloween theme with a costume party. Live music provided by Lucky Dog. Bidding was again 100% online. Over $13,000 was raised for PA PAC.
