Project 2 Timeline Early Draft

  • Valkenburg, Patti M., Jochen Peter, and Alexander P. Schouten. "Friend networking sites and their relationship to adolescents' well-being and social self-esteem."

    The article studies the correlation to networking sites such as Myspace and the participants well-being and social self-esteem. They plan out a study with a hypothesis and use the whole scientific method to set up their experiment. The results then show the percentages of participants who received negative feedback on their profiles and those who received positive feedback. The graph shows all the information together to see the correlation, if there was any correlation, to the two things.
  • Chou, Wen-Ying Sylvia, et al. "Social media use in the United States: implications for health communication."

    As stated by Chou, “Social media has rapidly increased since 2000.” This study shows some health effects of those who use social media. The article studied usage of social media and showed that many side effects caused unintentional health problems. It also shows other problems associated with using social media and didn’t focus on just one illness.
  • Primack, Brian A., et al. "Association between media use in adolescence and depression in young adulthood: a longitudinal study."

    The article shows a study of adolescents who were part of an experiment for 7 years. Within that time frame, the participants were to use electronic media. Before the study, as a baseline, participants were tested for depression and were concluded not to be afflicted with it. The findings after seven years concluded that some participants reported having symptoms of depression.

    The article is a summary of how much blogging, social media use, and other online uses have changed over the years. It also shows changes by giving percentages of change along with how many people of certain ages use social media or have phones etc. The article gives a lot of different statistics to show how much technological usage has inclined year after year.

    The article talks about these dangers with reasons to be concerned about this new social media boom among young teens and adults. It also states about how much time on social media is too much, and what amount of time is a good amount of time to spend online. In fact, there is even a term called “Facebook depression” out there known among psychologists and pediatricians. Along with their thoughts of social media and knowledge of its effects on teens.
  • Blease, C. R. "Too Many ‘Friends,’ Too Few ‘Likes’? Evolutionary Psychology And ‘Facebook Depression’."

    Blease’s article goes into detail with a lot of research sources included about how social media and depression are shown to be linked. Along with stating ideas on the counter argument that the two are not linked at all. The article explains Facebook along with the new term “Facebook depression”. It offers clear research data into these subjects with good information and points on the research offered.
