  • Plankakul

    Plankakul (literally translated to formal system for planning) was designed by Konrad Zuse between 1943 - 45, but was not published until 1948. It was designed for use in engineering.
  • MATH-MATIC

    MATH-MATIC was designed to do mathematical calculations like FORTRAN. It was designed by Charles Kat and Grace Hopper in 1957.
  • Fortran

    Fortran ( Formula Translating System) is a programming language mainly used for numeral and scientific computation.
    Designed by John Backus, and developed by IBM and John Backus.
  • Lisp

    Lisp was created by John McCarthy, and it's main use is in mathematical computation, and artificial intelligence.
  • COBOL

    COBOL (COmmon Business Oriented Language) is an english based programming language meant mainly for businesses. The final specifications were written by Howard Bromberg, Howard Discount, Vernon Reeves, Jean Samment, Gertrude Tierney, and William Selden.
  • BASIC

    BASIC ( Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code,) was a programming language designed to be easy to use. It was designed by John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz
  • LOGO

    Logo (derived from logos, the greek word for logic), was created to help kids learn to program. It was developed by Seymour Papert, and Wally Feurzieg.
  • B

    B (a contraction of the name of an earlier programming language, BCPL,) was created by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie. It is used in some embedded systems, where C is not necessary.
  • PASCAL

    Named after the french mathmatician, Pascal was designed to teach structured programming. It was created by Nikluas Wirth.
  • C

    C (the succesor to B) is a programming language designed by Dennis Ritchie. It is used for programs in place of assembly programming.
  • ML

    ML (short for MetaLanguage) is used for proof techniques in theorems. It was developed by Robin Milner.
  • SQL

    Structure Query Language is a language for database management designed by Donald Chamberlin, and Raymond Boyce.
  • ADA

    ADA (named after Ada Lovelace), was a programming language for the DoD. It was designed by Jean David Ichbiah.
  • C++

    A programming language based on C, but with added emphasis on large software development. Made by Bjarne Stourstrup.
  • Python

    Python is a language focused on readability, and concisity. It was designed by Guido van Rossum.
  • Visual BASIC

    Visual Basic was a language based off of BASIC, intented to be easy to use, and is included with an IDE. It was developed by Microsoft.
  • Delphi

    Chiefly developed by Anders Hejilsberg, Delphi was designed to provide database connectivity to programmers, in particular Oracle (hence Delphi, the location of the oracle in Ancient Greece)
  • Java

    Named after the coffee, Java was a programming language thats main feature was WORA (Write Once, Run Anywhere), which negated the need for recompilation for different platforms. It is mainly used in web pages and applets, It was created by James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton
  • PHP

    PHP (which stands for PHP: Hypertext Processor) is used dynamically create server scripts. It was designed by Pasmus Lerdorf.
  • JavaScript

    JavaScript was a programming language designed to compete with Visual Basic, as Java was competing with C++. Netscape Navigator was the first browser to support it, and it was developed by Brendan Eich, an employee of Netscape. It is mainly used in client side web applications.
  • IBM RPG

    Report Program Generator is a language that replicates punch card processing. It was created by IBM.
