FORTRAN was created by a John Backus team from IBM. As you may have guessed from FORTRAN being in all caps, it is based from the language being a formula translator, and the FOR from formula and the TRAN from translator make up this name. John George Kemeny and Tom Kurtzas created the BASIC computer language at Dartmouth College where they were Mathmaticians. They wanted to use this as a method to teach the students at Dartmouth who were enrolled in undergraduate courses. BASIC actually stands for Beginner's All Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. ADA was chosen in honor of a famous mathmatician, Augusta Ada Lovelace. This is in result from Lovelace's work with Charles Babbage. It was this work that gave her the nickname of "The First Programer" ADA was created by Dr. Jean Ichbiah at CII-Honeywell-Bull, and a team that he was the head of who lived in France. Java is a langage developed by a team that included James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton. It was orginially ment for "smart" TV's, which were a completly different concept than what we think of "smart"TV's as now, but cable companies (see what I mean when I say COMPLETLY different) found Java to complicated for what they wanted.
