Prenatal Development

  • First Month

    First Month
    The embryo is developing quickly. The heart, brain, spinal cord, lungs, face, arms, legs, ears and eyes are in progress.
  • First Month

    The embryo is about 1/2 inch long. By the end of this month the heart will begin beating.
  • Second Month

    Second Month
    Arms and legs are becoming longer and more shapely. Eyes take on color and eyelids form. The brain is growing and directing the baby's movements.
  • Second Month

    Brain is rapidly developing and controls movement. Other organs begin working, such as the liver and stomach.
  • Third Month

    Now called a fetus. The fetus moves often, but the mother cannot feel it. Bones are growing. Kidneys begin their work. Fetus now has fingerprints.
  • Third Month

    Third Month
    All organs are present and working but are still immature. The fingers and toes take shape.
  • Fourth Month

    Fourth Month
    Fingernails begin to appear. The umbilical cord is growing and is carrying blood and nourishment to the fetus. The fetus is developing air passages, but they are not yet in use.
  • Fifth Month

    Hair begins to grow on eyebrows, eyelashes, and scalps. Lungs begin to recieve an ample blood supply. Lanugo (soft body hair) and vernix caseosa (protective coating) protect the baby's skin from amniotic fluid.
  • Sixth Month

    Sixth Month
    The fetus is very active. Some of the activities include stretching, kicking, sucking the thumb, and opening and closing the eyes. The fetus can hear sounds.
  • Sixth Month

    The fetus is 8-12 inches long and weighs 12-18 ounces. All organs are maturing. The fetus can hear breathing sounds and movement.
  • Seventh Month

    Seventh Month
    Fetus is gaining weight and lenght rapidly. Soft and flexible bones are developing.
  • Eight Month

    Lungs are now able to support the baby outside of the womb.
  • Ninth Month

    Ninth Month
    The baby will move into birth position with it's head down and the baby's nose towards the mothers backbone,
