  • Settlement around Fort Pitt

    Settlement around Fort Pitt
    The first settlemt begain to grow arounf Fort Pitt with Traders and Settlers. They built houses and cabins in the "lower town" near the ramparts and in "upper town" along the Monongahela. There was a count of 332 people and 104 houses.
  • Fort Pitt Blockhouse

    Fort Pitt Blockhouse
    The Fort Pitt Blockhouse is one of the oldest structures in Western Pennsylvania. The blockhouse was built around the outter walls of the fort to reinforce defense. Today this is the only building of the fort left. Located today at Point State Park.
  • Iron City

    Iron City
    Piitsburgh sat in one of the most productive coalfeilds in the country, but was also known for petroleum, natural gas, lumber, and farmed goods. The second court house on Greant's Hill was compeleted of gray sand stone.

    The first steamboat was built in the city of Pittsburgh.
  • Steel City

    Steel City
    Iron and steel industry developed rapidly after the 1830's and became one of the dominate factors in industrail America. By 1911, Pittsburgh itself had grown into a industrial and commercial powerhouse.
  • Development

    Oakland became the city's predominate cultural and education center. With three universities, museums, a library, music hall, and botanical conservatory. The University of Pittsburgh has the second largest learning building named the Cathedral of Learning. The building towered over Forbes Feild where the Pittsburgh Pirates use to play.
  • Steel Industry

    Steel Industry
    U.S. steel industry came under increasing pressure from foreign competition and from American mini-mills that had much lower overhead by using salvaged steel. Manufactures in Germany and Japan were succeeding offering lower labor costs and powerful government-corporate partnerships. The mills in the city suffered from this and slowly started to shut down.
  • Three Rivers Stadium

    Three Rivers Stadium
    Three Rivers Stadium was a multi purpose stadium holding homes games in the city for the Pittsburgh Pirates as well as the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2001 the stadium was imploded.
  • Point State Park

    Point State Park
    Point State Park is 36 acres located in downtown Pittsburgh. The park includes outlines and remains of the two oldest structures in the city. The Fort Pitt and Fort Dequense, on the land also sits the Fort Pitt Museum. At the very point of the park is a fountain which sprays water 150 feet up into the air. Point State Park in use for many events that the city has and is a nice place to relax.
  • Growing City

    Growing City
    In 1980 Pittsburgh's economy shifted from heavy industry to services, medicanes, higher education, tourism, baking, corporate headquarters, and high technology. The city today has been ranked one of the most livable cities. Major companies have choosen to operate out of Pittsburgh some are Intel, Apple, and Google. The city just keeps growing and developing.
