Pierre Duhem published his book the Aim and structure of Physical Theory. In this book Duhem explains his thoughts on the philosophy of science. His views, as explained by James Becker in his review of the book, are that theories are not meant to be explanations of experimental laws, but the "logical and symbolic representation" of them.

  • Duhem-Quine Thesis

In 1951 Willard Quine challenged Duhem's 1906 thesis. Duhem's thesis stated crucial experiments in physics were impossible as there could always be more than one theory to explain the results. In 1951 Quine's "Two Dogmas of Empiricism" is what brought Duhem's thesis to mainstream philosophy of science. Quine's paper defends Duhem's thesis and adds to it by suggesting that it should not only apply to physics but all sciences.
