Werner Heisenberg (December 1901 - February 1976)

  • Publishes “Über quantentheoretische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen”

Translated into “Quantum-Theoretical Reinterpretation of Kinematic and Mechanical Relations”, Heisenberg publishes his first theory of quantum mechanics. He is only 23 years old.
  • The Uncertainty Principle

Heisenberg publishes his Uncertainty Principle that brought him to fame. This states that the position and the velocity of an object cannot both be measured exactly, at the same time, even in theory. Further, it states that the determination of the position and momentum of a mobile particle necessarily contains errors the product of which cannot be less than the quantum constant. Not of high importance at a human scale, but must be considered while studying atoms.

  • Nobel Prize for Physics

Heisenberg is awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for his theory and applications regarding quantum mechanics.
  • Appointed Professor of Physics at the University of Berlin and Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics

Though controversial, during WWII, Heisenberg is appointed director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute and took a leading role in Nazi Germany's nuclear research. Ultimately, he is unsuccessful in creating a nuclear reactor or an atomic bomb.
