Weston W. Carpenter was the first Dean when Phoenix Junior College opened in the Fall of 1920. Carpenter, along with the principal of Phoenix Union High School at the time, worked closely with faculty at University of Arizona to create academic programs for their junior college. Students adopted the bear as the mascot.

Phoenix Junior College was recognized by North Central Association in 1928. Also, voters approved more buildings to be added to both Phoenix Union High School and Phoenix Junior College. There was even an addition of the "Bear's Den" for students to socialize at.

Phoenix Junior College had now changed its name to Phoenix College. Robert J. Hannely became the 5th Dean. Studen population reached 1,267- the largest in its history.

Dr. Myrna Harrison is named the first woman president of Phoenix College in 1989.

The Ace Program begins, which gives high school, at-risk youth students the opportunity to take classes for college credit.
