Starting with the first large-scale protest on 9 June 2019, led by the Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF), who estimated one million attendees. Ending on 27 March 2020, the day Chief Executive Carrie Lam enforced the first ban on public gatherings due to Covid-19 - though this does not mean that the protests stopped. This is just to reflect a rough timespan.

Beginning on 11 November, the first time tear gas was used by police on campus at Chinese University of Hong Kong. Ending on 27 November, when the last of the protesters at Polytechnic University was believed to have left. (Source)
