A large solid deposit of graphite was found in Borrowdale, England. It had been thought to be lead instead of graphite at the time.

A huge Deposit of graphite was found in Grey Knolls, England. It was a very large deposit and it was found to have great value. At the time though, this was thought to be a deposit of lead. Which is in fact very poiseness.

The Germans invented a graphite stick used for writing.

The blueprint for the wooden encased pencil was drawn by Lyndiana and Simonio Bernacotti. The pencil was made of Juniper wood and resembled a modern day pencil.

The deposit that had been thought to be lead in Borrowdale, England was finally discovered to be graphite not lead.

In The 1800s England began to run low on graphite in the deposit. To conserve graphite they began mixing it with powdered clay and water. They would then mold it then bake it.

The first wooden encased pencil in America, in 1812, was made by William Monroe, a Concord, Massechusetts cabinet maker.

On March 30th, 1858, Hymen Lipman, Received the first patent for the eraser that was attacthed to the end of the pencil with the ferrule. Then sold it for a thousand dollars to Joseph Reckendorfer.

The patent of the pencil on the end of the eraser was lost after the courts decided that the patent should have no worth and all companies should be able to put an eraser on the end of the pencil.

By the 1890s, all pencils cases were painted yellow. they were painted yellow because the Americans wanted to honor the Chinese by signifying that they were using Chinese graphite. Yellow, for the Chinese, signifies royalty and respect.
