    Having the first public high school open up to students for a free of cost education was essential to shaping American education today. Without public high schools, our country would be significantly lacking in preparing all students for further education (college) and/or successful employment opportunities.

    The creation of the First State Board of Education was what brought Horace Mann, also known as "The Father of American Education" into the seat of Secretary of Education. Mann pushed for the issues that were hindering the students in schools be changed. He pushed for "common school" which gave all American children an equal education.

    Education for All Handicapped Children
    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act, passed in 1975, ensured that any children who had disabilities would have specialized education, which helped shape the Special Education schools we have today. This act is so important to the historical ladder of education because every child should have equal opportunity to learn and handicapped children did not have as equal an opportunity attending a regular public school if they were blind, deaf, etc.

    This report indicated that schools were failing and showed Americans the decreasing educational scores of students in schools. The report helped shape education today by helping America realize that more funding was needed for education and that in order to compete with education in other countries, changes needed to be made. These changes were a part of shaping education in America today.

    The No Child Left Behind Act shaped how money towards education is spent in America. The act also helped America to determine what students should be learning in school and how their teachers are trained. This act had an immeasurable impact on education today in that it made national standards to help students succeed and decrease the number of children left behind in educational success.
