    Before 1889 Australia was made up by 6 British colonies ,
    .these colonies were partly self governing but s till under the power of the British parliament

    Henry Parkes the colonial segretary of NSW deleivers a speech at the Tenterfield in NSW calling all colonies to federate, meaning to unite. This speech went to be known as the Tenterfield oration. Sir Henry Parkes later becam know as th father of federation.
