Pat Membrey - history of the atom

  • John Dalton

    John Dalton
    Born 1766 and Died 1843
Theory was based on that atoms of different elements could be distinguished by differences in weights.
  • J.J Thomson

    J.J Thomson
    Born 1856 and Died 1940
Theory based on that there are smaller particles than atoms.
    Discovered the electron
  • Michael Faraday

    Michael Faraday
    born 22nd September 1791. Died 25th August 1867
Faraday’s theory, what happens when electricity is used on a solution.
  • Ernest Rutherford

    Ernest Rutherford
Born 30th august and died 18th october 1937
Ernest Rutherford blasted alpha particles onto gold foil one atom thin. He thought the particles would pass through the foil but some of them bounced back.
  • Niels Bohr

    Niels Bohr
Niels Bohr’s theory was that there are more electrons orbiting around the outside of the nucleus than the electrons that are orbiting close to the neutron
  • James Chadwick

    James Chadwick
    Born 20th October 1981 and died 24th July 1974.
James chadwick discovered the Neutron. Not until 1932 did the English physicist James Chadwick finally discover the neutron. He found it to measure slightly heavier than the proton with a mass of 1840 electrons and with no charge (neutral). The proton-neutron together, received the name, "nucleon."
  • Louis de Broglie

    Louis de Broglie
    born 5th august 1892 and died 19 March 1987
Broglie discovered that electrons can act like waves which helped explain some of the things electrons do that we have never been able to explain before.
  • Werner Heisenberg

    Werner Heisenberg
    born 5th December 1901.Died 1st February 1976.
Heisenberg theorized that no experiment could measure the position and momentum of a quantum particle simultaneously
