    Roosevelt offered columbia ten million dollars cash, and 250,000 in yearly rent to allow the U.S. to build a canal. Most of the Columbians did not like this because they thought it would give the US permanent control over the 6 mile stretch of their territory. Other Colombian said that the rights were so much more than the United states had offered. Colombia’s government wanted more money. However, Roosevelt was not very patient and didn’t want to lose time to bargain.

A revolt took place. U.S. gunboats waited in the harbor to provide support for the rebels. the U.S. marines landed in Colón to prevent aggressive Colombians from reaching Panama city
