    origins of cold war :)

  • First time US president doubts USSR

Roosevelt doubted the possibility of cooperation with the USSR. :(
  • atomic diplomacy

Truman offered stalin information about the bomb in return for the re-organisation of soviet-controlled governments in Bulgaria and Romania. Sadly, the Soviets were not intimidated but sped up their own atomic programme. SO this accelerated the start of the nuclear arms race thanks to Truman.
  • US unwillingness to collaborate in post-war economic reconstruction

The US state department "lost" a $1 billion loan that was supposed to be given to the USSR! Hence the soviet believed the US was unwilling to cooperate.

uh-oh the soviet decided to not join the International Monetary Fund and the world bank.

oh this had a serious impact on the US policy makers! Led them to change to a course of firmness towards the USSR.

A loan request by the soviets led to the US imposing conditions of dropping trade barriers in Eastern Europe and compensation for US assets seized in Romania and Bulgaria!
  • US policy towards germany is CHANGING!

Beginning of a breakdown in cooperation over Germany because now, the US realises that Germany is the linchpin of the European economy. This division of Germany marked a similar division of Europe.

    uh-oh, thats serious
  • Clifford-Elsey Report

Reflected the US perception of the USSR which had crystallised by this point in time.....oh no, this would lead to the....RESHUFFLING OF TRUMAN'S CABINET!
  • Truman doctrine

First American declaration that they would step in to deal with Soviet aggression. Laid the foundation for the Marshall Plan in June 1947.
BUT Truman didn't mention the term soviets in his speech hence indicating that at this point in time, the US were still unwilling to confront the soviets.
  • CZECH COUP OMG!

This coup had a catalytic effect on the decision of congress in passing the marshall plan in March 1948! The severity is evident if we compare the amount of votes by which the plan was passed with those that passed the Truman doctrine, votes from the house of representatives were 281 vs 107 compared to 318 vs 75!
  • Marshall Plan

Initial willingness of the Soviets to cooperate as seen by their sending of a 100-man delegation headed by molotov. But the US were really mean and insisted on economic cooperation hence this triggered the soviets to create Molotov plan.
  • Berlin blockade

came close to the 1st armed clash between the US and USSR and increased the feeling of military insecurity. First time there was military intervention in the cold war, US became confident in their containment policy.
  • NATO

    Began the military split.
BUT it remained nothing more than a political association until the korean war so...its formation sadly lacked significance.
  • West germany joins NATO!

Led to soviets creating warsaw pact
  • Warsaw pact

Cement breakdown in military cooperation ....:(
