ODU was a two-year institution known as the Norfolk Division of The College of William and Mary-VPI. And sports teams were called the Braves. Not yet the Monarchs.

The original name of the Old Dominion University student newspaper was the High Hat but today is the Mace and Crown.

Dr. Webb's dream was to see ODU as a separate institution. His dream came true before he died in 1984. Dr. Webb served as the first President of Old Dominion College from 1962-1969.

Dr. Dorothy Johnson: "There wasn't any real disruption on the campus. There were times when students got very excited, particularly around the time of the shootings at Kent. There were some meetings, some demonstrations, and some demands made on the president. The president turned it over to the faculty to handle. The faculty listened to complaints. I think things worked out without any great trouble"
