    since the maori first arived in New Zealand there have been earth quakes. they told storys about ruamoko who stomped under ground.
  • Wairarapa, magnitude 8,2

    This is the strongest earthe quake. New soil was pushed to the suface that is know the main street of welitngon.
  • Marlbrough, magnatude 7.5 (depth 12 km)

    nearly all the stone bulidingswere destroyed. many were rebuilt. There were about after shocks.
  • Arthur's pass, magnitude 7.1 (Depth 12km)

    Fallen rocks closed the railway line in between christchurch and and the weast cost.
  • Murchison, magnitude 7.8 (depth 20 km)

    Land slides blocked roads. Fourteen people died.
  • Naiper, magntude 7.8

    In boats sailers saw the buildings crumble. They were first to provide help. Cracked gas pipes caused fire. Smashed water pipes made it tricky to put out the fire. 256 people died
  • Wiapaapa, magnitude 7.2 (depth 12km)

    The worst damge was to mastertons main street. Rebuilding took along time because men were at war
  • Inangahua, magnitude 7.1 (depth 12km)

    A land slide damged the buller river and raised the water level by 30m! Because the river could have flouded the town, so Inangahua was evacuated.
  • Egecumbe, magnitude 6.5 (depth 10km)

    A crack, 7km long and 4 meters wide appeared along the fault line. no won died but some were baddly injured.
  • Darfield, magnitude 7.1 (depth 10km)

    This shalow quake caused the strongest shaking ever in new zealand. sand and silt underground were turrened into a muddy liquid and bubbled up onto the roads and peolples gardens in a prossece called liquefaction.
  • Christchurch, magnitude 6.3 (depth 5km)

    The city was dameged. one hundred and eighty five people died and thousands injured. This was the fourth time the top of the catedral had been damaged in a earth quake.
