    In Wolrd War One, nurses mostly cared for sick and wounded soldiers. Many were volunteers, called Voluntary Aid Detachments, or VAD's. They were not given trained nurses' work unless absolutely necessary.

    During World War One, Elsa Brandstrom was nicknamed "The Angel of Siberia." She worked in the Russian Army, volunteering her nursing skills in order to help sick and wounded soldiers. Her work permit was taken away, yet she continued to to travel illegally for her work until she was arrested in 1920.
