Nursing Informatics

  • Nursing Informatics first coined as a term

"First coined by Dr. Marion Ball and first described in 1980, by Scholes and Barber as:
“the application of computer technology to all fields of nursing-nursing services, nurse education, and nursing research” (Stated by Chauvette, A.
  • Nursing Informatics is a specialty

ANA recognizes nursing informatics as a specialty
  • Electronic Health Records (EHR)

President Bush calls for adoption of interoperable EHR, which was, in theory, an electronic system that one could access a patient's health record from any facility that they went to. This would help retrieve patient information in emergency situations and decrease the time spent gathering records from other facilities. (Sewell, p.190.)
  • 2008-2012 HIT strategic plan

    This included 2 goals -
    1. patient-focused healthcare
    2. population health
    (Sewell, p.4)
  • HITECH act

HITECH act – incentivized hospitals to improve healthcare outcomes and decrease costs (Cummins, M. R., Sward, K., & Guo, J. p. 380)
  • 2011-2015 Strategic Plan

Included 5 goals "with a mission to improve health and healthcare for all Americans through information and technology." (Sewell, p. 4)
  • ACA signed into law

2010 Affordable Care Act signed into law; this may have changed the way some accessed healthcare and would need records.
  • 2018 and Beyond

The role of nursing informatics might change as new policies and healthcare reform changes. The way that technology can interface from facility to facility may change, and in the least, may be transferred via internet/email faster if they are not on the same system. Informatics and data analysis will continue to evolve with how payors pay if insurance focuses on preventative care, informatics would analyze data that would optimize care for patients and prevent the increase of healthcare costs.
